A lot of progress has been made to centralizing diagnostic images. In Ontario, the deployment of the Diagnostic Imaging repository is 100% complete.
All hospitals within the province are able to transfer medical images to the central repository.
Further work is planned to expand the repository by accepting images from smaller facilities and IHFs (Independent Health Facilities) .
Currently, only about 10% of IHF are connected to a DI-r.
This results in segmented and silo-ed patient data; incomplete patient history/longitudinal record, increased exposure to radiation due to duplication of imaging exams, increased patient frustration and delays.
HOWEVER, access to the images currently in the DI-rs is still an issue.
The eMedPortal allows organizations and facilities, regardless of whether they are contributing images to a repository, the ability to query and retrieve exams from the repositories.
The eMed Portal solution will improve patient care and the patient experience by providing access to millions of medical images and reports .
The solution utilizes an advanced technology architecture to facilitate a robust and efficient retrieval and FEM (Foreign Exam Management) workflow, incorporating features that emphasize patient privacy and security.
